Family,
Had Mr. Grimes as a teacher at Washington Park School (a math teacher legend) and I was fortunate enough to work with him at Fortunoff's of Wayne while working my way through college many years ago.
Great guy and I have a lot of great memories of him.
Real sad to hear of his passing,
Don

Mr. Grimes not only taught us forth grade, but he also taught us "to dream the impossible dream/ to fight the unbeatable foe..." in his "mad, mad world of Grimes." In room 26, we "were in the spotlight... always." He was there during the best and worst of times and helped us along the way. His knowledge of the ins and outs of the newspaper (being a former newspaper reporter) encouraged us to keep awareness of current events. If it weren't for him, we wouldn't grow up to be the people we are today. The best teachers will always leave a lasting impression on your life. My condolences go out to Mr. Grimes' family and may he rest in peace.

I was fortunate enough to have Mr. Grimes as my fourth grade teacher thirty years ago. I had just finished up two very difficult years in school and was very unhappy going to school on a daily basis. However, when I met my new fourth grade teacher, Mr. Grimes, I just knew that everything would be different, and it was! He taught me so much more than the school subjects -he taught me how to be more confident and how to enjoy learning. This opportunity helped shape me and was a large part of the reason why I pursued education and became an elementary school teacher myself. I was blessed to run in to him many times over the years and thrilled he was able to meet my husband and daughters, since he was such an integral part of my life. I was truly blessed to have had him as a teacher and a friend. Rest in Peace Mr. Grimes.

My most sincere condolences to the beloved family of my dear friend, confidant, mentor and co-worker, Mr. David Grimes. I could search the world over and never find a more loving, devoted and PROUD Father and Grandfather. As I conveyed to him many times, every child should be so fortunate and blessed to have a Father and Grandfather even half the man he was. A gentleman and a gentle man, I could not have been more honored and privileged to call him my friend. There are not words adequate to describe how much I will miss him. His shining example of patience, perserverence, diligence and selfless determination in the face of adversity will encourage all who knew him to never give up, never give in. I believe that God shows His love for us by the precious people he places in our lives, when we truly love someone, we can never have them long enough. I am just one, among many, who loved, and was loved by, Dave, for this, I am eternally grateful. Though now temporarily separated by time and space, his memory will live on in each of our hearts, may we continue his legacy of gentle encouragement, and loving kindness to all we encounter, until we meet again in eternity. Guess it's time for you, my friend, to "follow your dreams" at last, believing each glorious dream will finally come true. I can see you watching us from Heaven's window...cheering us on to victory at every turn. I love and miss you, my wonderful friend...
ox, Susan

Mr. Grimes was my 4th grade teacher at Washington Park School in Totowa back in the 1990s, and I can say without hesitation that he was the best teacher I've ever had. He instilled in me the confidence to pursue my dreams, notably my interests in English and writing, and to use my voice, and he encouraged us all to engage our imaginations without bounds. From fostering our creative writing to encouraging us to build our own robots using household items to staying after school to help me publish my writing online, he left a lasting impression on me that won't soon fade. My sincerest condolences to his friends and family. He was a well-loved man and will be dearly missed by so many he impacted.

My deepest Sympathy to the Grimes family for this terrible loss. He was such a wonderful man that always had a hug for you and a smile on his face...Years ago when Fortunoff was at the Willowbrook Mall I used to see him all the time. He always was so friendly asking how you are and about your family. He will be missed beyond belief. Heaven has a special angel. Love, Nancy

Dave was a colleague and more importantly a friend. He was one of the most kind, thoughtful, and gentle souls I have ever had the privilege of knowing. His love of teaching was evident in the care he showed his students and all who he came in contact with. Dave was one of a kind and will be greatly missed. I am a better person for having known him. I am so very sorry for your loss.
