I am so very glad that Steven stopped in to see me on campus...it had been a very long time since we had seen one another, but we immediately connected talking about family and friends---and we laughed, a lot. He was very brave, and inspirational, in the face of his medical challenges. I do believe he knew how much he was loved.

I remember Steven as a little boy, full of lively pranks and smart remarks, always pushing the envelope about what it meant to be fully engaged in life. What a fun cousin to grow up with! We were only a year apart. He taught me how to cross my eyes, much to both our mothers' scolding that they would stay that way--they didn't! We crawled under dining room tables to hammer family feet with our fists until his very lovable, equally lively father pulled him out by whatever he could grab and Steven took the punishment for us both. Since the light switch for the bathroom in our grandma's apt was *outside* the bathroom door, we waited for someone to enter, then shut them in darkness--or flashed the lights, disco-style, while they peed--and yelled at us through the closed door. Steven bravely took the punishment for us both always. I didn't smoke cigarettes with him behind the shed with his childhood friend Dino (Dinosaur), but I remember! May he rest in peace knowing he lived a fully energized life and made a big difference in ours simply with his presence.

I am so sorry for your loss. Steve was a great guy, always laughing, always smiling-at least when I saw him. There are no words to help ease the pain but you have the memories of Steve to carry you and help you through this difficult time. May the happy and wonderful memories last a lifetime. Steve is in heaven watching over all of you. Whenever you look up he will be there for you.

To my cousin Steven. A man of great courage who held life dear and fought for it as long as he could. You will be missed, but you live forever in my heart. There are souls in this world which have the gift of finding joy everywhere and of leaving it behind them when they go.
I love you, my baby cousin. te amo, marie
