Mr. Waraske was my 8th grade teacher at School 18 in 1970. The students adored him, he taught us everything about our city, Paterson, NJ - he was so proud and we were proud too. Mr. Waraske had the greatest penmanship which is extremely rare to see today, his handwriting was beautiful and true perfection. He was an inspiration to us and a true gentleman... he will missed and always remembered. My deepest sympathies to everyone that loved him.

Whenever I would see Vince he would always have a smile on his face and he would share some interesting historical information . His gentle nature coupled with his soft sense of humor would bring a smile to my face as well..

My cousin Vince was a very private person, but in his public life, he was know as a great historian. He served as the Historian for the City of Paterson for many years and gave frequent lectures on aspects of Paterson's history. He was also a great resource for American history, and I remember asking him about Civil War battles, Andrew Jackson's inauguration, and other topics. After his mother died, he cared for our Aunt Helen in their 2-story house for many years, which was quite a chore. I will always remember him as polite, industrious, and proper. We were all stunned by his sudden and rapid decline, but we are grateful that he did not suffer long with illness and was a vibrant part of our lives until just several months ago.

Vince was my God-father and first cousin. I remember being told that he weighed just over 2 pounds at birth. Although he was always thin, this contrasted with his voracious appetite, which he regularly demonstrated at family get-togethers and holiday meals. He also had some odd favorites including hot lemonade, and “ultralight tea (leaving the tea bag in for only a few seconds). He was regularly attired in a button-up sweater and a bow-tie.
On my thirteenth birthday, while most relatives were giving me cash gifts, Vince gave me three shares of General Public Utilities stock. He was always a fan of conservative investments, particularly dividend-paying stocks.
Vince was a historian par excellence, especially when it came to Paterson, NJ. He collected old newspapers, photos, paintings and furnishings -- including many cuckoo clocks. His mind was full of facts, dates and events. I’m not sure whether he had a formal middle name, but to me, “History was his middle name.

His obituary didn't mention that
he was a Historian..He knew everything that there was to know about Paterson's past. He often wrote articles and gave presentations around the city about the history of Paterson. There was an article about him in the local paper a few years back.

I worked with Vincent over 20 years ago. He always brought a smile to my face. He remembered my birthday EVERY year and gave a call on that day. He also called my husband every year. He never forgot a date! Vincent was a shining star here, and I am sure an angel in heaven.
I was going through a very, very bad time in my life when I worked with him. He would always check in with me and have a joke or fact related to that day in history and he would make me laugh. I loved his stories about how Paterson used to be and admired his love of the City. He liked antique postcards with pictures of NJ cities. I would look on EBAY and send him what I found. I often told him that if he used the computer and got on the internet, it would open a whole new world for him. He would just laugh, especially when I told him that he should sell some of his "collection" of all things Paterson, on EBAY!
My favorite story was about when he went to school in Paterson. If a student was "bad" they would just call for the "blue car" that would take the student to another school where the "bad" kids went. No special classes, no IEPs or interventions. The old days were much more uncomplicated and he often talked about that and how students and schools have changed over the years. We went to visit him a few weeks ago after I hadn't heard from him since his birthday. I was shocked to see that he wasn't well...I never knew before that.
Vincent, I will always miss you! Love to you and your family.
